AHMADU UMARU FINTIRI: ADAMAWA STATE GOVERNOR’S TRANSFORMATIONAL LEGACY IN EDUCATION
The importance of education cannot be overemphasized as development thrives on literacy.
The education sector is of tremendous importance in all levels of governance and strict attention should be paid to it. This is because the growth of any society is dependent on the level of education of its citizens.
That’s why Benjamin Franklin said “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”
No doubt that the journey to make Adamawa State great again has gathered momentum and is progressing steadily.
The present administration was confronted with myriad of problems that were capable of derailing it from achieving its cardinal objectives, but Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s dogged determination to succeed has placed the state on the highway of development.
Even when he met a State that was sucked in unfathomed debt, a moribund economy that depended solely and wholly on the Federal Allocation, dwindling Revenue, worsening insecurity, occasioned by the triple effects of insurgency, kidnappings, cattle rustling and the urban insecurity like the notorious Shilla Boys menace, Governor Fintiri can now beat his chest and be a proud father looking at the unprecedented amount of work currently ongoing around the state.
The present administration has paid matching grants to enable the State access UBEC funding for the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 which enable the administration construct 500o classrooms across the state.
The present administration had made basic education free and compulsory for Primary School and Junior Secondary School students. Government has also made WAEC, NABTEB, NBAIS and NECO examinations free, as they have been paying for the exams since the coming of the administration
Statistics showed that in northeaster Nigeria, 2.8 million children are in need, of education-in-emergencies support in three conflict-affected states (Borno, Yobe, Adamawa). In these states, at least 802 schools remain closed and 497 classrooms are listed as destroyed with another 1, 392 damaged.
Worried by this scenario, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri who is equally not a Rockefeller from the origin, but a historian and one who knows the value of education has taken the bull by the horn to ensure that children of the lower class not only get access to schools but acquire sound and qualitative education like their counterparts from rich families.
Upon taking office, Governor Umaru Fintiri made education a priority, through allocating the sector highest amount of more than 10% in the 2020 capital expenditure which is a humongous signature milestone by the governor that will leave his footprints inexorably on the sands of time in Adamawa.
Government also reintroduced the abandoned school feeding for boarding students. The immediate predecessors have almost jettisoned feeding of our wards in the boarding schools. It became a priority that boarding houses enjoy a daily three square meal of balanced diet to make their learning environment conducive and healthy.
In a bid to harness partnership opportunities for the State, the Fintiri’s led administration also keyed into the BESDA initiative, a world bank funded program to reduce the number of out of school children.
The Government has also sponsored School-on-Air during the COVID-19 pandemic and the evacuation of Almajiris back to their home States and uniting them with their parents.
On scholarship funds to students, after almost a decade of non-payments of scholarships to students of higher institutions despite the fact that they were made to purchase forms multiple times, the present administration made a promise and ensured payments directly into the accounts of the students.
Government has also ensured the payment of UBEC matching grants from 2016-2020 and access over 10 Billion to facilitate the construction and rehabilitation of 5000 classrooms across the State.
